Features > Save Money > Cash Is King With Camping Too
Having cash can sometimes save you the very same thing. We all know this example of a way to save a little money, but take RV insurance. I save $100 a year just with my RV insurance company (but it's this way with most companies) by paying it all at once each year. They don't have to bill me and I don't have to remember to pay checks or worry about the mail when I'm gone on a trip. Even with government, I save by registering the RV for longer time periods. It depends on your state but you can usually register for at least a couple years at a time.
Those who have a little money upfront save more in the long run. Those who don't have cash have to pay more. Service fees, service charges, high interest rates all sneak over and smack those that live near the financial edge.
I spent many years on that edge, crossing over once in a while to get hit with penalties for each day of being late, before going back to a cash only/no debt lifestyle. With cash, you can sometimes bargain with people. The RV spot rate is $22. I say to the clerk, “I only have a twenty dollar bill. I have a credit card, what do you prefer?” Or leave off the question and just make the statement. Depending on who is behind the counter, they may take the cash. Employees probably don't care (unless they are skimming cash) so it works better with a manager. After credit cards, fee, paperwork and so on, the cash may be a better deal for them. On a related note, you could also ask if there is any raking or trash pick up you could do for the spot. You may just find the person who doesn't want to do that work themselves. I bargain with doctors and dentists and the prices can drop by more than half if you pay cash on the spot. Sometimes I wonder if health insurance is worth it for anything but catastrophic coverage.
We can even take this example to purchases. If you can spend a couple thousand dollars (or even less) on solar and better batteries, you may save a bundle on hookup fees and generator costs because your overnight options expand dramatically.
I hope this economy leads to a fundamental shift in the way the world works with money.
