Cold Weather Camping in RV

Are you ready for cold weather camping? Here are some tips in getting through the coldest spells of your journey.

The first thing to know is how much of your water system is outside of heated areas. Some RVs have much of it within heated sections and others have it outside and exposed to the weather. This is something to inspect when you are buying a RV as well if you are inclined to camp in colder weathers.

Drain all hoses. Any water remaining in hoses will probably freeze easily. And remember the outdoor shower house if you have one.

Open your sink cabinets or any place that has a water line running through it. This exposes the normally closed area to your heat system. You can also add pipe insulation to any exposed pipes to help it not to freeze. I did this to all piping underneath the sinks in my RV just to help prevent freezing while parked.

Keep windows covered. Anything is better than nothing but you can change to heavier curtains or drapes. You could do what I did and buy reflective insulation rolls at Home Depot, Lowes or others. Then cut panels to size for each of your windows and place them inbetween the glass and your shade or curtain. We found it did threes things. It added R-value for cold weather camping. It reflects the sunlight and keeps the RV cooler in the hot sun. It also made the RV darker for those full moon nights or when a neighbor RVer leaves a outdoor spotlight on all night.

If you have hookups, consider things like a small space heater or an electric blanket. You are only heating yourself or a smaller area rather than the whole RV.

Position your RV at the campground so the wind hits the smallest section of the RV possible, the front or the back, and with the least amount of openings like windows and doors. This will reduce both the amount of cold air getting inside and the rocking motion of the RV in high winds.

Park in the sunniest spots you can find and park so the most amount of windows are facing south for more sun exposure. This can get complicated if it is windy so you have to weigh the weather and conditions as to what is best.
