Ya again this disease is spreading and it shows this will create a serious problem again through out the world. It should be prevented in all countries including Mexico.

Everybody just needs to make sure they are packing a piece for protection when they go down there so then that way you can shoot back.

It is hit and miss. Mexico City is a very large city so it has those same issues like any city of it's size in the world. But it is definitely a notch more dangerous than most of it's size. Just be very careful is about all anyone can say. A higher end hotel is apt to both be more secure and more of a target.

Does anyone have any comment on Mexico City? I plan to go there in July, and stay in the historic center. Everything I read seems hit and miss on safety there.

I am 65 and retired. I am thinking about driving my '99 chevy suburban in and around Mexico for 3 months. Entering at McAllen TX. Is this a high risk plan? Should I forget it? Thanks.

It sounds like you have good plan. Blending in more is always best no matter where you go. Whether it's safety or just a more local experience, I usually try to dress more like locals. Ixtapa is more safe than Zihuatenejo, that is for sure. It is close to Puerto Vallarta and the cruise ships are still going there every day. I was thinking of going to that area myself in January with my family, in fact. Like you say, it is important to balance experiences and living life to the fullest is best when you can help others. One can stay safe hidden in their home for an entire lifetime but not live much in the end. People thought I was crazy for going to Bosnia but I loved it and it changed my viewpoint on many things that in turn I share with others.
She will be away from the cruise area and beaches which has both good and bad aspects to it. I can only add to use more common sense. Try not to wander out at night, stay as public as possible when out in the public. Make sure transportation is legitimate and not a scam. Kidnapping would be the number one threat there so I would be watching every vehicle around me pretty closely.

We are allowing our 15 year old daughter to go with my sister and bro-n-law to Ixtapa to help with ministry for a month Dec - January 2010. What is your opinion of the area? They have gone to mexico for years, usually Rock point and Baja, but the last few years Zihuatanejo. They had several bombings and their stuff stolen the first night last year. However they said this year they are goin to Ixtapa because it is more tourists. they are carefull people and very wordly wise. My bro-n-law would definitely pass for a native, and speaks spanish fluently. We have have preparing our daughter with very simple dress and are dyling her hair darker instead of bleach blonde. She is studying spanish and seems to be able to pick up easily. What are your recommendations for the area and do you have any specific advice for us? She is very precious to us but an experience in life and helping others can be priceless, but as long as it is not at the cost of hers.

In November 2009, my husband and I are flying into Cancun and then taking a shuttle to Playa del Carmen to NH Riviera Resort. I'm really getting nervous thinking we need to change our plans. I'm feeling like it's not safe because of the swine flu, and because of crime. I had wanted to go out of the resort and do some shopping. What do you think?

I was just looking at Mexico cruises for myself during the upcoming season. That is one of the more safe areas so far in Mexico. Plus you are going on a cruise so you will either be near the port or on a excursion which are pretty well controlled. If you are concerned about safety, I would stick to the cruise excursions and not go off on your own.
