I thoroughly agree with this article! I traveled a lot when I was growing up, and although we couldn't afford to go cross-country or do fancy vacations, we did go all over my home state. We went to art galleries, museums, a children's theater, and various events at the area college campuses (I especially enjoyed their musical performances ranging from the Glenn Miller Band to a special performance of The Mikado).

Even if you can't afford to travel extensively, exposure to different people and cultures from an early age is the most important thing... if you're lucky enough to live in or near a college town, check to see what kind of events, special programs or displays, &/or art galleries are available to the public- many of these things are FREE or very cheap!
