Games on the road

You don't want to hear "are we there yet." Keep the trip interesting. The best tip is to have a flexible low-miles-per-day schedule that allows for lots of tourist stops and breaks but we all know that probably isn't happening.

License Plates
Look at license plates and find the ones that are unusual or not what you see the most. Remember that many states now have school and commemorative plates. It's not the one per state it used to be.

Geography
How to play: The first person thinks of a place (city, state, country, or whatever you choose) and then the next person has to think of a place that starts with the last letter of previous place. The places should be real of course but you can set your own rules. Example: Dad starts with Alabama, daughter says North Dakota, son says Austin and mom says New Orleans.

Alphabet
This is a great game for children beginning to read.
How to play: The object of the game is to find words on the road starting the letter of alphabet in order. Example: Daughter see A on a sign. Mom sees B on a Best Western. Dad sees C on a Cadillac. You can also add memory and make each person try to repeat the whole list before each turn. See who can recite 20 plus objects as it gets harder.

Twenty Questions
How to play: One person thinks of a person, place or thing and each person in the family has 20 questions to figure out what it is. Remember that "yes" or "no" can only answer the questions.

I Spy
I spy is a classic favorite for family car rides. Set the rules and boundaries ahead of time. Is it in the car or all around as far as the eye can see.
