Family Packing Tips

-If possible, lay our your suitcases a few days ahead of time. As you think of things to bring, throw them in. You'll probably pack too much at first but you can always pare down later and eliminate things you decide you really don't need.

-Make lists and cross things off as they are packed. You may have thought of something last night but not really packed it yet. Keep one for each family member.

-If you have a baby, your list just got a lot bigger. Remember everything you use at home; diapers, diaper bag, pacifier, wipes, travel sizes of ointments and lotions, bibs, toys, books, blankets, stuffed animals, stroller, portable crib, food and all cups, utensils, bottles and juices that go along with a meal.

-If you have room, special pillows and blankets are nice. You never know if the hotel pillows will be a rock, foam or down.

-Use compression or "space" bags to compress things down in your suitcase. Using these, you can probably hold almost twice as much stuff. Just remember that the weight goes up with more things and less air.

-Throw in a plastic bag to hold dirty clothes and separate them inside your luggage.

-Have older socks or underwear that are nearing their end of use? Bring them along and trash them in hotels along the trip. They get one last use and you lighten your suitcase for souvenirs or easier carrying on the flight home.

-Bring clothes that interchange with each other to make more outfits. Bring at least one or two outfits per child per day. New stain resistant clothing may be worth the extra money as well as cargo or tech pants with inside zippered pockets. These are great for passports, credit cards or larger bills that you don't take out all the time on your trip. Just put smaller bills in easy access pockets.

-Bring pajamas to be more flexible in your room. Some people are too hot or too cold or the room temperature just doesn't regulate well.

-Bring a flashlight. You don't know your way around an unfamiliar room or building at night or during power outages.

-Bring your camera, film, extra memory cards, batteries, charger or whatever other accessories you might use with it. Try to use unbranded bags or use a black permanent marker to darken bright logos. Carrying a camera around in a bag with "Nikon" on it may bring unwanted attention to a nice piece of equipment.

-Bring extra smaller bag for day-trips and backpacking.

-Use ziplock bags for lotions, toiletries or anything that can leak or melt all over your luggage.

-Blend in. Try to avoid regional market clothing. Example: Wearing a Chicago Cubs hat in other cities or countries just screams where you are from. You become either a clearly marked tourist or antagonize the local fan to throw things at you. Travel is more fun if you can blend in. And in today's world, it's safer too.

-Remember that you can buy many small things on your trip. You may not need all those diapers or razors right away. Sometimes it's more fun to buy suntan lotion in Italy and remember where you got it when you use it 3 months later at home.
