For Johnson-Sauk Trail State Rec Area: Very nice campground, large sites! Men’s restrooms were in need of a good cleaning(soap scum in showers) and some minor repairs. Overall a very nice park.

OTRA with Willie

For Johnson-Sauk Trail State Rec Area: This is our favorite campground in IL so far. ~sites are very far apart and private ~plenty of places to hike/walk/fish ~lake for fishing, rowboats and paddleboats on site to rent ~restaurant is very good ~showerhouse is average ~electric 30 or 50 amp depending on site ~a few water spigots ~playground ~largest round barn on site (get brochure from the restaurant for tour dates) ~wood $10 a bundle ~"The Pines" are pretty ~beware of the falling hedge apples and black walnuts

Darkwater

For Johnson-Sauk Trail State Rec Area: Regarding my earlier critical review, I have followed up with campground managers and my fees were refunded. I hope my experience was highly atypical and I am willing to try again. It is a beautiful and well maintained campground.

Darkwater

For Johnson-Sauk Trail State Rec Area: This was our second time staying at this campground. The sites are well spaced and the park is attractive with great tall pines. The Red Earth Inn is worth a visit for a good meal. The Round Barn and Lake make for great stops. However, we may never return. The camp was largely unstaffed. The campground hosts took no responsibility for their duties and loud drunks spoiled the weekend with a huge campsite birthday party, with cars filling the road and loud yelling until well past 1am. If the campground had any cell phone access we would have called the police. The host’s campsite was only three spaces away from the party, so there was no way they could not have been aware of this hours long debacle. And no hosts were at their site when we left, either. It was a huge disappointment.

SW

For Johnson-Sauk Trail State Rec Area: This is our favorite weekend campground! Spacious lots and very peaceful. There is a beautiful part where you can camp among the many pine trees, but we prefer the area that has a huge open grass yard. Our son can ride his bike around and around while we can keep an eye on him. The host is always pleasant. The bathrooms and showers are clean. There is a lake to fish or rent boats. A beautifully maintained round barn is available to tour (check hours) for a small donation. BlamedThe restaurant is pretty good, as well. It’s just a very relaxing campground!

SF

For Johnson-Sauk Trail State Rec Area: Nice park quiet park stayed in the loop with cool looking tall pine trees, sites were spaced out well but the pit toilet has a bright vapor light (like many IL camp grounds) that ruined it at night next time would take a site at the entrance of the loop farther from that awful light. Good showers, hot water, clean. The other loop is more open with some shade trees and grass at sites. Five stars if not for the light.
