For Shepard State Park: Arrived February 13, 2023 for one month in a truck camper and kayaks. Never used the facilities but visiting friends said they were nice. Site 22 long gravel uneven site with very good privacy. Probably the strong point of this campground most sites are wooded and separated. Some have water (stream) access. Unpaved roads and sites results in some dust. Friendly helpful staff. Boat launch old but reported to be fixed over summer. Entrance gate not working but not that much outside traffic. Close to a unusually good Planet Fitness. MIFI devices for AT&T and Verizon worked fine. Rescheduled for next year. Good paddling location with access to gulf. Senior discount.

For Shepard State Park: Clean, woodsy campground with large spread-out sites that give one a sense of privacy. Broke a sweat on the way in though, for we used a map app that did not show the route had a bad RR crossing and an even worse bridge. If one didn't wreak destruction on our 43' motorhome, the other would have, so look for the state park sign and turn on Ladnier Rd. The trees on Graveline Rd mentioned by previous reviewer have been trimmed for the most part. We made it in the campground entrance by going the wrong way on a one-way with permission from the receptionist. We stayed in #9, which is listed as a 43' site, but we had a couple to spare and plenty of room to park the towed alongside. There was a short path from the site to the water, but there was trash down there. Satellite and Verizon were fine. Bathrooms were right across from site and were aged and stained, but they smelled clean. No grab bars or other handicap amenities, though. The campground was quiet, but the neighboring property owner across the water had noisy dogs. My fault for not noticing on the website back in late summer when we booked, but all sites have a 40' max RV allowance. We were okay, and no one even blinked at us, so just be aware.

For Shepard State Park: This park while a bit Spartan is very very nice. in fact we made reservations to come back while we were sitting there. The roads and sites are gravel or gravel/dirt but it is well-maintained and the sites are large and clean. There is water and 50a power at the sites with a dump station on the way out with a threaded water hose so you can hook it straight up if you have an internal tank flusher. The bathrooms/showers while older were very clean and smelled that way. The park is patrolled frequently by staff and it is one of the quietest parks that we have been to which is a plus when you want to feel like you are getting away from it all while still being just outside of town. Most of the sites are wooded so you feel like you are in the forest. The roads are not like a dragway for the golf cart crowd with blasting stereos and flashing lights like many other places we have been to. The last 1.5 miles to the park on Graveline Road are dicey however and if you have a big rig you should pay careful attention to the oaks lining it. I’m at 13’6” and I steered around a tree with a large trunk that was hanging over the roadway somewhat that had RV parts clearly embedded into it. I took pictures but am unable to share them in a review. The entrance to the park is also a bit tight once you go past the initial guard house but other than that it was a wonderful experience and we will be back again. We stayed at site 22 and it was fantastic!!! They offer military and senior discounts which is a nice $26 weekend.

For Shepard State Park: If you are traveling through the Mississippi gulf area, we highly recommend a stay at Shepard State Park. The sites are very spacious, the administrative staff is very friendly and helpful, and the park itself is great. Every site had plenty of space between each and its very quiet overall. We loved having water and electric for only $18 a night! The park and all trails throughout were very dog-friendly, and they even had a very spacious dog park. The park had numerous walking trails, archery, and even a frisbee golf course. We loved staying here! Ps. After walking the campground numerous times, we think site 12 is the best! Super secluded site with your own front window to the bayou! Pick site 12!

For Shepard State Park: Very nice wooded campsites. Mine had a fire ring, grill and new picnic table. Lots of low hanging branches , so big rigs be aware, but my site could easily fit a 40’ camper. Bath house is old but in nice shape. A train can be heard in the distance several times a day, but not too loud.

Frustrate

For Shepard State Park: I reserved this campsite online and on the main pages it said Tents and RV - water and electricity - blablabla... everything looked good. I showed up after dark and there are signs that say NO TENTS ON RV SITES at several places. So, I am a female, alone, on the road working and only have a tent. I was so upset! So I sent the night anyway, because I had a reservation, and the next day went to the office and asked if I could stay 1 more night PLEASE!! No. No. No. Here is my question- if this rule is so important, than put it on your website - not buried on other pages.

For Shepard State Park: Not good for a big rig. Lots of overgrown tree branches. One at the main entrance was no higher than 10 feet - scraped across the top of our rig. Seems a bit run down. Employee at the check-in didn't seem to care about telling us anything about where our site was. Said "look at the map". Fail.
