For French Creek State Park: Awful park. We used to stay in PA parks years ago- but no more. They are not taking care of them. This was our last attempt. Very narrow roads, sites too tight and not at all level. Couldn’t use enough blocks for most sites if you tried!! Also looked very unkempt. Needed mowing (ticks!!) No staff on site at 4:00 on a Sunday. We left and went 30 miles away to private campground- and they are arguing about any refund, because they “automatically” check you in at 3:00pm and that negates refund for all of your reserved nights. Never PA state parks again!?

For French Creek State Park: I’ve stayed in State parks in every state in America. This one ranks at the very bottom of them all. The campground is not maintained well, weeds growing high, grass not being mowed. I was made to move my towed vehicle off the gravel and straddle the pavement on my site because the head honcho is “spending thousands of dollars on grass seed”. Yea, right. Use some common sense guys and gal. The strangest thing, those with Pennsylvania plates were allowed to park on the grass. It’s a shame, trust me, the parks in Tennessee treat out of state campers with the same friendly common since approach you should expect at all state parks. The roads getting into this park from all directions are constantly hitting the Motorhome so if you decide to try this one, get ready for repair/paint work.

For French Creek State Park: We were in loop A since we do not need hookups. We had a tornado warning as well. Not sure if it is so uncommon anymore in PA. Site was okay, showers good, cell service was on and off. We were only here for one overnight, and for that it’s certainly adequate.

For French Creek State Park: We camped in a 36 foot motorhome. Sites are all back in. We tow a 16 foot trailer and the park allowed us to detach it and set in the overflow parking space. We were in C loop because it is the pet friendly loop. The sites are beautiful, in the woods, with a picnic table and firepit. I only met Josh, Jen and Ranger Dave B. in person......but they were ALL pleasure to speak with. There are numerous wooded beautiful trails here and two big, beautiful ponds as well. The park has the biggest swimming pool I have ever seen in a state park! Things to do: You MUST drive on route 23 to Shady Maple Buffet. It is one of the most beautiful drives in Pennsylvania - Amish share the road in their traditional dress and horse pulled carriages. They also can be seen plowing their fields with horses and hand made farm equipment, which they stand on to plow. The farms are in perfect with their old stone homes and huge barns. You can stop on the road and buy their fresh produce, milk, cheeses. Further down route 23 turn left on 322 and drive into Ephreta. On Fridays, there is a HUGE flea market, with fresh baked goods, Amish crafted furniture and lots of cool stuff. If you turn left on 322, you head towards Honeybrook. Look for the farm on the left that invites you in for lunch and dairy products for purchase. If you turn left on Rt 82, it will bring you straight back to the park.......but don't be afraid to wander down some back roads.....they are packed with beautiful restored old stone homes from the 1700-1800s. If you are a foodie, may I suggest breakfast at the Jukebox in Boyertown and lunch or dinner at the hidden gourmet spot with outdoor patio and craft beers - The Covered Bridge (Oley PA), which is also a perfect drive past corn fields and farms...and of course a covered bridge. For Italian, May I recommend Vincenzo's in Douglasville PA.

For French Creek State Park: This experience was a first for me. When we came up to the entrance booth they waived us through and directed us to campsite B restrooms to seek shelter from a tornado warning. As we were driving to the restroom a ranger was warning campers in area B to take shelter in the maintenance area between the restrooms. Once he let us in he told us move the back and hold on to the water pipes if we needed to. We had 6 campers in the shelter for an hour and a half waiting for the storm to pass. Pennsylvania doesn’t get a lot of tornadoes in a year but they get 8 times more than Oregon gets and Oregon is a lot bigger state so this experience was more than we bargained for. Well now for the review I can’t say enough for the staff. They were very helpful and risk their own safety for the safety of the campers. The sites were separated enough to give privacy and the trees and vegetation added to that privacy. The rest rooms were very nice, and they also had two sinks outside of the restrooms if people needed them. The campsite is close to the Hopewell iron furnace attraction and it wasn’t a long drive to Valley Forge. Both are interesting attractions. We didn’t hike on them but they do have some nice trails. It was a very nice park and I would recommend them highly. I was surprised I was the first to review them. Interesting note I was concerned that the man that waved us through the entrance didn’t have much protection in his entrance shack. When I went back to pay him he showed me that they have steps going down to a restroom and a small kitchen area, so he could have escaped a tornado if he needed to. That made me feel better when I left.
