For Toms Cove Park: This is the campground that I revolved a "first timers camping trip" around (1500 miles, 7 campgrounds, this was stop #6). It is also the ONLY campground I called ahead & asked questions etc. Good thing because I found out it was cash or check only for payment, so for that I was prepared. As directed, we showed up on March 1. Upon checking in I was THEN told there would be no water for the site that I picked (waterfront). Ok, We would deal. The staff was pleasant & friendly. After getting to our site, unhooking & setting up, mom went to the closest bathhouse only to find it locked. When we inquired why, we were told there is no water until March 15th. To say I was angry is an understatement(this is also the only place I had any problems with the entire trip). At no time when I called weeks prior or when I registered did they tell me there would be no water till the 15th. I was only told no water at my site. Oh, they would move me to be by the office, THAT bathhouse was open.....so for $76 a night they want me to camp next to the office???? Just on principle alone, charging full price for a campsite that has NO amenities available whatsoever except electric (clubhouse, pool etc all closed)is outrageous. That aside, we loved it. We were also the ONLY people there the first 2 nights, then a couple came who had been coming there for 40 years. They showed us where the ponies swim over, which happened to be just across the water to our left. We found out our 2nd afternoon while drinking coffee on the pier, the ponies were right across from us! Having the place to ourselves & such an awesome view sitting by a fire right on the water with the lighthouse right in front of us was nothing short of spectacular. THIS alone made the price, & lack of amenities, worth it. Our last night there the wind was crazy. Kudos for the staff for calling to warn us about it (I have no doubt they were dreading calling me)& see if we wanted to move further inland. In a nutshell: If you want the Chincoteague/Assateague experience & beautiful scenery without the crowds, go when they first open in March. You can have your pick of waterfront spaces & enjoy the place without the gazillion people that will follow soon enough. Yes, it is pricy for only having electric, but to us it was worth it. I imagine if I was to go there when I was younger & brought my kids it would be a great family place as well. Not for nothing but given the location, I have no doubt that the owner knows he can get away with whatever he wants simply for one reason: LOCATION. He has it, period. If the owner was of good character he would only charge half price those first 2 weeks before the water is turned on & any other amenities are available. But then again he knows he has the location...

For Toms Cove Park: Don’t try to stay here. They will tell you that they have spots but by the time the snail mail gets there, they will have given it someone else. We had our 2 week trip planned with this in the middle of the trip and now our entire trip is falling apart at the last minute. They don’t seem to care. I guess unless you live down the street and can eat the mail to them the next day but if you live a few states away then it is pointless to try. Very rude and frustrating. Multiple people told us that we had two spots and were good to go, but we do not and they could care less that they ruined our trip.

For Toms Cove Park: Great park but lousy customer service. This is the third time we have requested to be put with other campers and they have made sure we were put at least one section away from them. We even took the day off to ride here and speak to them personally about us being put together. Still a block away. They make reservations difficult and you can’t use credit or debit. No reservations over the phone. Mail or in person only. Love the area. Been coming here for years but I am about done.
