For Starved Rock State Park: Do not come to this park on the weekends. It is way too crowded. Illinois should be ashamed of themselves, but probably do not know how many improvements are needed. We camped on the west side site 18. Level and good table/fire ring. Only electric. Sites are pretty well spaced. Did not use the bathroom but took a peek. Only 2 toilets and showers. Not enough but clean on Monday. The campground needed mowing, the water to clean sewer pipe was broken. Overall the campground and park is over used. Trash on all the trails. Very said. The lodge is beautiful and well taken care of. Had dinner on Monday night. It was good.

For Starved Rock State Park: A very sad and tired campground. The State of Illinois should be ashamed! This is adjacent to a beautiful state park. This has the potential to be a very nice campground but needs a lot of work. We only came across one campground employee during our stay and he was pleasant to us. The sites on the east side are very overgrown in need of new gravel and to be trimmed up. Many are excessively muddy in rainy weather. These offer the most privacy but that isn’t a selling point when you can’t put an awning or slide out. Most of the fire rings are ok but the picnic tables are in rough shape. Our travel companions ventured down to the bath house to find fences smeared on the wall in the men’s room. Ewww! Who does that? Really??? I decided to take a look at the end of our stay at the ladies room. It appeared to be fairly clean but could certainly be better. They reported the walls in the men’s room had been cleaned off but it was still on other areas. The other section of the campground is a much more open grassy area. Don’t know about the bathhouse there. At $25 per night I felt it was over priced given the conditions and amenities. I understand it gets very full on weekends. On the plus side, we stayed On a Monday through Thursday in early June, electric only site 89 in a 27 ft TT. We found it very quiet, had some lovely evening fires and surprisingly did not get devoured by mosquitoes. Proximity to Starved Rock State Park, Mathieson State Park, Utica, LaSalle and Peru was great! So much to do and see. Check out the Westclock Museum, Hegeler Mansion, August Hill Winery and “Haze” restaurant. If stopping by Haze you must try “Bama White Nachos. Yum! I’m a big fan of state parks but In the end I won’t stay here again. I’ll try the KOA down the road.

For Starved Rock State Park: Nice amount of handicap spaces. Clean, freshly painted showers with hot water. Good variety of 30 and 50amp service. Only a swingset with three swings. Real close to Starved Rock hiking which is free. Late self checkin until 10pm.

For Starved Rock State Park: Came in for overnight stay(had been traveling all day), had us in a grass field, level easy to get to set up. To our surprise there was no water at sites, had to go fill tank first and return for setup. Showers were almost unusable so beware. Minimal Verizon cell signal. Will not stay here again!

For Starved Rock State Park: Over priced campground for the amenities. The park is just tired and lots of deferred maintenance. Many dead trees in the campground due to EAB. The restrooms are not sufficient for the size of the park.
Camp in the open area for more spacious and level spots.
The trails are awful. Lots of trash and the signage is so old it's barely legible. It wasn't what I would expect for a Labor Day weekend.

We camped in a 35 ft. RV.

For Starved Rock State Park: Only complaint I would have is the equipment at each campsite is a bit run down, the fire ring/grill and picnic tables were in pretty bad shape. The rest of the campground and park were great, We loved the trails and waterfalls.

For Starved Rock State Park: A bit of a tourist trap. A beautiful place to visit if you can hike in the off season. Try and see the eagles as well. We didn't but we didn't try.
