For Zilpo Recreation Area: This is a USDA Forest Service campground and is within the Daniel Boone National Forest. Zilpo is definitely "off the beaten path" but worth the effort to get there. The tent sites are all crushed stone which makes them somewhat uncomfortable to sleep on without a good air mattress or sleeping pad. It's also uncomfortable to kneel on when setting up. Most of the "camper" who go there seem to have motorized camper vans and/or pop-ups. We die-hard tent campers and the distinct minority.

Mostly we loved the place and would recommend it. Mosquitos were very few and far between and the access to Cave Run Lake was great.

So why 4 stars and not 5? My major complaint with the place is the management! We were there for a week and the restroom for our loop was out of commission for most of our stay. The adjacent loop's restroom were only slightly less convenient, however the cleanliness and supplies were marginal at best (I.e., toilet paper in the ladies room). The second complaint is with the camp store. For a holiday weekend, it was very poorly stocked given the nearest store was 12 miles away and the campground was nearly full.
