For The Refuge: My husband & I as well as our 2 Dogs loved our stay here. Great communication w/ camp host. Very clean & quiet campground. Gas station & convince store located right next to the property. We enjoyed the docks that overlooked the sound. Laundry & showers in clean working order. Only one washer & dryer available. Camp host was always available for questions. We would stay here again. Close to kitty hawk , nags head

Highlander Flyer

For The Refuge: Yup, it’s a pleasant little campground with mostly seasonal and permanent RVs. It is clean and well kept up, mostly, I suspect, due to those rules a previous reviewer complained about. We arrived following our Google Map instructions which was a good thing as there are no informational or directional signs along the way and only a small entrance sign at its driveway. Upon entering I stopped at a placard with the managers phone and site # and gave him a call. He was there in 2 minutes on his golf cart, white beard and all. A short conversation disclosed that he was a military veteran and very patriotic. No gun was evident. Perhaps some from the more restrictive Blue States do not always understand RedState gun humor. In any case he assigned me to Site 15 and suggested that I park nose forward to better enjoy the lake view. No map was necessary as only those first 15 lake side sites are available for transients. The wi-fi and bathroom codes were given verbally and easily remembered. We had an enjoyable and uneventful overnight stay with no gunfire evident. A short 20 minute drive took us to several nice seafood restaurants which allowed for dogs at their outside seating. I would certainly return if passing through again. Traveling solo with my service dog in a 25’ Sprinter Class C.

For The Refuge: Nice little campground with back in sites on a small lake. There is a small sign that says Refuge at the entrance. Once you enter, drive straight ahead and you'll see the managers place on the left. Managers site is 35. Sites are gravel and pretty level. Very clean restrooms, shower and laundry. Convenient to Manteo and just a short ride over to Nags Head or Oregon Inlet. Many seafood restaurants nearby and places to buy bulk quantities of shrimp, fish or soft shell crabs (Oniels). There is a nice dock over the marsh which is interesting to walk. There are no trees and it's often windy. It's a decent, no frills place to stay.

Mahja

For The Refuge: Clean place but not very friendly. Map says go to lot 9 to check in but this is someone's camper. Apparently no one ever notified Allstays that the checkin changed to a small hut on opposite side of campground. We were greeted by a very cranky white haired man with a beard in a golf cart telling us we were in the wrong place (at lot 9). He told us to drive to his red roofed hut and then he drove off. Inside the hut is an ominous poster telling everyone due to the increased cost of ammunition - no warning shots would be fired if we misbehaved in any way. What a pleasant way to say "hello,". It was late and we had no other place to go for 70 more miles so we decided to suck it up. After all, what could possibly happen during a quick one night stay??
And so it began... like on your first day of kindergarten, at checkin we were given a 3 (THREE!!!) pages of rules. No map. No welcome. Nope. Just rules of what we can not do or face "termination" (yes...like the terminator). One page of rules was dedicated just to the size of the mat allowed outside your camper. Inside the bathouse are not only more rules but a copy of the Bill of Rights posted so we knew what rights we apparently have or do not have.
When we woke up we were greeted by an angry neighbor (full-time resident at campground) who claimed we had stolen his folding chair! Trust me- we had no desire or energy after pulling in late the night before to go out like thieves in the night to steal someone's $10 folding chair! Regardless, cranky guy from checkin ( Ron Brown?) called police. Next thing we know, we've got two police officers in two sheriff's cars surrounding our little camper. Apparently cranky had called the police. Turns out some kids must have taken the chair and dumped it next to our camper. We were framed :-)
Felt like we had checked into Camp Alcatraz. Fortunately we didn't end up in prison. Save yourselves. Skip this place!

Sachmo

For The Refuge: Well-maintained campground. Some sites are next to a lake and have a nice view. There is a walkway extending around the lake and into marshlands which is interesting. Staff is friendly and helpful. Not a shaded or wooded campground.Sites are close together. Overall a positive experience.
