For Pine Lake Campground - Wood Buffalo National Park: We were looking for a place to stay in Wood Buffalo NP that would be central to hiking trails and other points of interest. We're self-contained and don't use the facilities. We stayed on a weekend in mid-July in our 8 metre (25 foot) MH. This in a nice campground centrally located in a huge national park. Note highway 5 is paved to Fort Smith as of November 2017. The 65-km (40-mile) drive from Fort Smith to the CG is on a good quality gravel road. The CG is set in a natural boreal forest. It includes 18 back-in sites in a loop that are relatively large, relatively flat with good spacing between each to allow for privacy. There are 3 larger pull-through sites nearer the beach that are flat with water views through the trees. There's a mix of sun and shade throughout the CG. The sites are primitive/no hook-ups. There's a dump station near the entrance with no rinse water. There're water spigots in the park with a boil water notice. (Note free potable water is available for RVs at the Visitor Center in Hay River if you need to fill up on the way.) There's no wifi nor cell service. Sites are all walk-in and reservations are not available. Self-register at the entrance. There're staff on site. The staff at the office in Fort Smith (867-872-7960) are quite helpful and can let you know if sites are available before you make the 65-km (40-mile) drive. We had a good choice of sites on a weekend in mid-July. The location was quite convenient for activities at Pine Lake and hiking trails in that area. Use appropriate bear and mosquito practices in the park. The CG is a short walk to the beach on Pine Lake for swimming, canoeing/kayaking. There's a playground at the beach and in the CG. It is a 65-km (35-mile) drive to Peace Point canoe access and 38 km (23 miles) to the Salt River hiking trail head. The Parks Canada Visitor Center in Fort Smith is helpful and has an exhibit about the park. There's wildlife and ample viewing opportunities (bison, bear, elk, waterfowl) throughout the park.
