For Memaloose State Park: A very pretty park with mature trees and terraced sites on a hillside overlooking the Columbia River. The sites near the river are great but not many. The downfall to get only 3 stars is the location between interstate 86 and an active freight railway. It's an awful place for a campground but it is the nature of the Columbia River valley on the Oregon side....the interstate runs along the entire gorge and so does the railway with little space between the river and the rocky cliffs and hills to the south. The noise was ok inside our ClassB for sleeping but would be intolerable in a tent. It's really too bad such a nice park has to be in such a bad location. We only stayed one night.... look at options across the river in Washington State - no interstate, no rail.

For Memaloose State Park: This park is only accessed while going west on 84, we were going east, so we went past it, and came back in. Directions are clear on this, so we knew what to expect. What we didn’t was that the park is accessed through the back of a rest stop, so pull over there and go through the rest stop and follow the signs. The sites were big, level and some nice trees. If you want the best views, I would stay along the river. The area was noisy due to proximity of the very active two rail lines, on in Oregon, one in Washington, along with noise from I-84. This is why I give it four stars as it was pretty noisy. The park does not have water access, but you do get views of the river. Verizon was ok for us here, and the bathrooms looked clean, but we did not use them. Hosts kept mostly to themselves, but when we asked questions they were very helpful. We drove in to Hood River (the City) and it has a great downtown, with a farmers market and lots of shops and restaurants. Great food vibe going on there. I will come back and explore other options for places to stay, as the access and noise made this a nice place but not very peaceful.

Terry

For Memaloose State Park: Lovely, clean, large sites, green lawns, clean restrooms, Columbia River views. My wife and I enjoy the sounds of trains so we loved the lullabies of the train below us on the Oregon side as well as the trains on the Washington side. We will be back! (Don’t tell anyone about this park!)

For Memaloose State Park: Beautiful, roomy sites. Bring earplugs for sleeping (highway, trains). Quick drive to Hood River for the Fruit Loop trail (and Rite Aid for ear plugs.)
