For Fort Griffin State Historic Site: A beautiful well kept park although it feels a bit remote with no cell reception. There is a resident park manager. We would have spent a couple of nights but there was a family reunion coming in and we didn’t want to deal with it. The historical Fort Griffin exhibit was very interesting and we spent a good amount of time at the inside displays and the walk around the historic site.

The TLCs

For Fort Griffin State Historic Site: It seems this park is often frequented by locals who know the park and use it for group gatherings. - We encountered that, when we found out that people arrive and reserve sites for later arrivals even though the park states first come. When we arrived many (good) sites were already reserved with chairs n tables, and park management condoned this, and told us what was still free. Definitely not cool! Sites are spread out in clusters, and vary significantly. Some are simply a short piece of asphalt along the actual road, others very wide, long, and even have river access. Some sit on top of each other, others are far apart, all are mostly gravel, and appear level. Some have shade, others not. Early arrival is indeed important. . There is NO reception of any kind in the park, not ATT, nor VZ, or T-Mobile (and of course no Wi-Fi). The bath houses are supposed to have an ATT booster, but that didnt work for us either. . Site had fire pit, grill, and metal table. Dump is very difficult to use, there is a site right next to it and parked cars block access often.

For Fort Griffin State Historic Site: Very nice place to spend the night, a weekend or longer. Easy in and out. Very well maintained. Clean bathrooms. Nice playground. Great Texas Fort. There is a lot to see if you are interested in a bit of history too. The State of Texas Longhorn herd is also located here as well. Not on a major thoroughfare but beautiful country and well with the drive.

For Fort Griffin State Historic Site: Not much to add to the excellent previous review. Very nice park!! We stayed in site 26 in our 37' foot motorhome and had more than enough room for our dinghy in front of our coach. Full Hook Up gravel site with a beautiful huge tree next to us, picnic table and grill, and a nature trail across from us. So glad we came this way, it was well worth it!

For Fort Griffin State Historic Site: Absolutely unbelievable. In the middle of nowhere. State still owns the park, but is now run by Texas Historical Society, because it was not a money-maker. Home to the well pampered official state Longhorn herd. The history alone is worth the visit. Robert E. Lee, Tecumseh, most of the big name lawmen and Cynthia Ann Parker had dealings with Ft. Griffin. The lady at the office is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge. I'm actually mad that I grew up 3 hours from this place, and just now stumbled upon it 40+ years later. It is a true Texas gem, tucked away and mostly forgotten. Golf cart loan to ride through fort area.

Camp site is outstanding, with large lots, lots of large shade trees, playground, volleyball court, baseball field, clean well-maintained showers, 2 nature trails, and no license required to fish in stocked pond or river. Seasonal reenactments, Longhorn demonstrations, campfire storytelling. This place is awesome

Virtually no cell service. This park is in the middle of true ranch land. Travel to and from park is on very wide, smooth 75 mph state highway system.

Peggy

For Fort Griffin State Historic Site: Best state park! Huge sites! Clean! Host was very nice! Only stayed one night but planning to come back and stay longer! Ft. Griffin is a stone throw away and the long horns are magnificent! Well worth the trip between Wichita Falls and Abilene. Great roads too! Don't miss it if you are in the area!
