For Elliott Lake Rec Area: Awesome place to stay. I was told no reservation, just first come first serve. Staff was friendly and laid back. Cost me $15/night. Very important to come in on I30 exit 207, as maps are likely to lead you to gates that are closed. From exit 207 signage is pretty good. Gate guard informed me that I needed to visit visitors center before coming to gate, but on realizing it would be challenging for me to turn around, told me to just stop there next time.

The camp is particularly well suited to children 5 to 15. Beach, playground, nature trail, and boats available to rent. Camp is clean and has electric, water and sewer. Some sites are not very level and extra hose is necessary to reach water in places. There is a high percentage of long term campers.

For Elliott Lake Rec Area: Very nice but don't use the directions to the site with apple that takes you the back way which is closed.

For Elliott Lake Rec Area: Military secret!!! Found this place purely by accident and loved it! Take EXIT 207 to the gate and follow the signs to Elliot Lake. It's very deep on the depot grounds, but easy to find and well worth it! You will be surprised with the the recreation area! It had everything--a beautiful lake, fenced swimming area, lovely grounds, children's play ground, beach, kayak rentals, tall trees, rental cabins right on the lake and even a conference center that would be great for your team building sessions for an organization! It had full hookups but no cable or internet but that was no big thing for us. The stuff was very accommodating, polite and took great care of us! They even gave us popcorn. Their little store sells basic foods and needs to include $1 pickles! There is a fitness center on the depot but not else. We did see a few eateries probably for day workers. We loved site #1 even though it was not very level. The bath/showers were clean. Only cost us $12/night! Sure wish we could have stayed more than one night! Thank you so much!

For Elliott Lake Rec Area: Elliott Lake Recreation Area at Red River Army Depot
Texarkana, TX
4 stars (Oct 5-7, 2016)

Who knew such a place existed on such a small military depot? ? Admittedly, we rolled in here thinking it would just be a convenient place to overnight at a cheap rate-- a very good rate-- and then we would be on our way. We ended up staying an extra night!

Elliott Lake Recreation Area was a tranquil get-away in a beautiful setting with tall pines. The staff were incredible... made me want to get a job there... Lol! Not to mention, they sell some darn good root beer in the small camp store!

The sites are first come, first serve. However, you can make a reservation if you know the site # and pay in advance. There were only 2 sites available that would fit our rig. We took the one facing the lake and closest to the office, site #1. The site would have been considered the primo site in the small park if only it were more level. We have automatic levelers, still we had to use some leveling blocks to get anywhere close. Plus, we thought we had the coach positioned enough between the trees to get our slides out. Turned out we misjudged one side by about 2 inches, placing our slide up against a tree. Needless to say, we pulled the slide in for the duration of our stay. There seemed to be quite a few people that stay for the long haul at Elliott Lake so securing a site may prove challenging.

Elliott Lake had great biking for me with no traffic on the road. The recreation office rented kayaks and canoes. There is also a sailing academy: the only one offered at any Army installation.

The cabins were nice, along with tent camping sites, a conference hall, a covered deck with kitchen for functions, a beach volleyball area, and a basketball court. The playground was better than those at some elementary schools. They also had this interactive game that was cool. You compete against an opponent by pushing flashing buttons is the best way I can explain it.

The depot also had a small gym that I didn't have the opportunity to check out. It does not have amenities, such as a commissary. There were no cable channels but the local channels were adequate. Cell reception was great.

We can only hope that there is space available the next time we pass thru this way!

Hard to find

For Elliott Lake Rec Area: Could not find main entrance. Literally drive around the outside of the installation with the Army reservation fence in sight for 3 hours then gave up and went to a Good Sam site that was easy to find. If going to this one be careful it may only have 1 gate and there are not signs that guide you to it if you approach from the wrong side. My have seen every side of the reservation that didn't have this main gate. Stay away from weird little county roads, they don't go in just to odd places that look like they go in on GPS.

For Elliott Lake Rec Area: Beautiful outdoor rec area. When you get there pick your spot before you go to the office. Do not drive to the office or you will be backing up. They have log cabins you can dent also. Very small camp store but they have the basics. Make sure you bring what you need. Lovely area and we will go back for leisure time. It is definitely off the beaten path. Had good phone service with Cricket wireless.

MC Thomas

For Elliott Lake Rec Area: Bring your own WiFi. Although the clerk said they had it, we couldn't access it. The campground was well kept and had lots of nice things for kids - including a water park. There was also a small swimming area in the lake and loads of equipment to rent. The exit off I30 is 207 not 206. The base has absolutely nothing (and I do mean NOTHING) in the way of amenities. No club, no PX, no commissary, no guest lodging, nothing. The price for seniors was great- $10 a night. Can't beat that!
