For Cave Mountain Lake Recreation Area: We absolutely fell in love with this simplistic, natural campground. No pool, no amenities, no hookups, no cell service…just quiet, peaceful, nature. The camp hosts were awesome (Peter, Carol, Melissa…sorry if we can’t remember all)…they were so friendly & personable and the area was immaculate. We’re actually considering becoming volunteer campground hosts because of them! There’s also a lovely local couple that sells firewood at 84 Cave Mountain Rd/Rt 781…you’ll see their sign with a wheelbarrow of wood for $10 on the right side of the road, heading up to the campground. We bought two loads that lasted all week. In short, this was a fabulous base camp for our travels on the BRP (4 miles away), quaint, awesome towns (Buchanan, Buena Vista, etc) and to points west to West Virginia, as well. For couples, you’ll love the Pink Cadillac, Great Valley Farm Brewery & Winery (awesome sunset views!), Halcyon Days Cider Co & Orchard Labyrinth (wonderful atmosphere and flights!). For families, Virginia Gold Orchards (you pick ‘em), Hull Drive-In, Mane Gait Equestrian Center (also an awesome Harvest Host!), Layne’s Country Store (for all those, ‘oh, I forgot! and then some!), Natural Bridge State Park and Caverns, and Virginia Safari Park. This is our third stay in this area and it’s one of our favorite’s to explore the region. You’ll love it, too!

For Cave Mountain Lake Recreation Area: Loved this campground! There are a couple of creeks running through it and it's heavily wooded. A number of campsites are creekside. All the sites were very clean and the campground was well maintained by very nice hosts. Bathrooms were clean and pleasant with flush toilets. The separate showers were roomy and each had it's own outside entrance. They had plenty of hot water and were free. No electric or water hookups but there are lots of water spigots throughout the campground so you don't have to go far for water. We were in a 30' motorhome and had no trouble navigating through the campground or finding a site large enough or level enough. There is one loop that is accessible only to smaller campers. There's a group pavillion, picnic area, and a lake with a sand beach that is walking distance from the campground. Not far from the campground entrance there is a turnoff (Petites Gap Road) that says the Blue Ridge Parkway is 4 miles away. We tried to go that way on the little motorcycle we travel with but turned back after about 2 miles because the road got too rough.
