For San Luis State Wildlife Area: PLENTY OF SPOTS HERE ABOUT 10 MILES FROM THE PARK. FREE 30 AND 50 AMPS HOOK UPS BUT NO WATER FILL BEFORE YOU GET HERE. YOU NEED TO BUY A COLORADO PARKS AND WILDLIFE PERMIT ABOUT $10.23 X PERSON FOR A YEAR. THE PLACE IS GREAT SPACIOUS AND GOOD FOR BIG RIGS. HAVE DUMP STATION BUT AGAIN NO WATER. THE VIEW HERE ARE 360 DEGREES WITH ALL THE MOUNTAINS AROUD SOME 80 MILES AWAY. LOTS OF BIRDS,

For San Luis State Wildlife Area: The campground is now 100% first come first serve, and free except for some stupid Colorado Parks and Wildlife pass that costs $10.07 for seniors IF you can get it. The problem is their website is horrible, but not to worry, the camp host will let you stay if you make a reasonable effort to buy the pass. That said this is a great campsite, lots of room, quiet, great views, and quite a few vacant sites when all the other campgrounds were booked out months ago. Mosquitoes are a problem, but some judicious us of Off Outdoor Fogger has allowed me to enjoy the sunset with my vodka tonic.

For San Luis State Wildlife Area: We stayed here on December 26 in a class C 26 foot RV. Our goal was to visit the great Sands national Monument. It is a very remote place and when we initially pulled in there were only one or two RVs here who clearly had been here for a while. Later in day more Rvs like us did show up. As we got further into park there were plenty of spots and all had electric. Everything was completely covered in snow. All the roads all the sites. This should’ve given us a heads up to one of the unique features of this area. The forecast for the surrounding area predicted temperatures in the 20s. However this area is geographically unique and all the cold air from the mountains sink to this valley. Nighttime temps dropped like a rock to 1 degrees. Yes, you read that right. Our RV was prepared for reasonable short drops in temps but not this extreme. Our fresh water lines froze but we thawed out next day. The views of the mountains is like nothing live seen before coupled with the remoteness. The skies were unbelievable and it is only 15-20 minutes to get to the great sands park. But you are on your own here, which is good and bad.

For San Luis State Wildlife Area: The permit fee has been raised to $43 per person. There is still electric (50/30/20) available but check (the first site we selected had an open ground). There is still no potable water available and not even flush water at the dump station. However, lots of open spaces and very dark skies at night.

For San Luis State Wildlife Area: Not really free but potentially so. The camp host required me to get a state wildlife pass for 36 dollars which I got at Sinclair gas station in Mosca. I stayed 4 nights so still a good deal. Other campers I talked to said he did not require them to get a pass or show a hunting or fishing license. I witnessed him telling a gal she didn’t need to get the pass. So hit and miss as to if required or not. Beautiful views of mountains. Warmed up last day I was there and bugs were awful. Lots of dog crap not picked up and some sites trashy. Verizon off and on at times but good with booster. A few OTA channels as well.

For San Luis State Wildlife Area: We were on our way from Denver to Mesa Verde and wanted a place to stop overnight halfway through the trip. Because we have a Colorado park pass and this campground was free, we thought it worth a try. When we first turned off Highway 160 and saw that it was another 23 miles to the campground, we were a bit leery. However, it ended up being only about 15 minutes out of the way – 10 of the 23 miles were in the direction we were headed anyway. Campground roads are paved and most of the sites are gravel pull through. Most or all of the sites have 30/50 amp electricity. The area is desolate and beautiful - wonderful sunsets and an incredible night sky. Even though it was early October, we were surprised by how many campers were out there with us. There is no water available on site so you’ll either need to fill up beforehand or do without. Our Verizon coverage was spotty but we did get some service. Surprisingly, about 20 over the air TV channels were available. There is a dump station available on site.

For San Luis State Wildlife Area: Free campground with water and electricity 25 minutes from the park. Views of the mountains were spectacular.
