For Dead Horse Ranch State Park: SKUNKS! Yes, the black and white kind! I saw two of them in the campground in the evening. I would not be outside after dark. Campground personnel are very nice. It is unfortunate that the campground ground is laid out similar to a commercial campground, fortunately there is more space but I felt packed in. Lots of nice trails and places to walk

For Dead Horse Ranch State Park: We needed a campsite with our 25 ft TT in the Sedona area. This place was full except they had 2 nights open in 2 different sites so we took it. The campground is about 30 mins from Sedona. A fairly easy drive. This campground gives you very beautiful views. We had a pull through site 92 and 85. We had to use slight levelers but sites are paved and mostly level. Plenty of room here. Not crowded at all. We have water and 30/50 amp here with no sewer hookup. They have a double dump station. 2 out of 4 bars with Verizon I like that this state park is in Cottonwood, and not Sedona. Sedona is totally commercialized and Cottonwood is not. Be sure to visit Cottonwood old down town. Quant shops and great restaurants. Bathrooms and showers are clean. Showers are a little small so if you need more room, use the handicapped. Haha Very friendly people at this campground and lots of hiking available around the grounds. We paid about $ 37 a night and would love to camp here again.

For Dead Horse Ranch State Park: The pluses are that the location and day use trails are great. Bathrooms are heated but not as good, tiny toilet and shower stalls. Staff are friendly. Minuses are the electric sites are close together like a KOA, no shelters. Prices are steep for what you get. New Mexico State Parks are half the price for twice as much of everything. 3 stars.

Laura

For Dead Horse Ranch State Park: Used to live in Caml Verde a LONG time ago and this State Park wasn’t here so when coming through, we had to stay given the reviews. We have a 35 foot fifth wheel and had no trouble parking in our Quail Loop pull through spot. I would like to give this place 5 stars, but knock it down one because the Quail Loop spots, while a good size, are really more like an RV Park, not a State Park. The biggest issue was the parade of barking dogs, and the lack of dog poop pickup by their owners on the trails. Other than that, we hiked over to the Verde River and Lagoons, and there are lots of birds. Did not see nor smell any skunks. Facilities are clean and well maintained. The park is close to town and all of the shopping there, and good Verizon. The weather was toasty (in the mid 90’s in mid October) so having a 50 amp service was good as we used our AC. Despite being close to town, the noise level (other than barking dogs) was pretty good. Townspeople are friendly, but evening traffic was hectic. Sedona, the Tuzigoot/Montezuma Castle and Well National Monuments, and Jerome are all nearby. This is a great spot to hang out and see some sites and also get some chores done.

For Dead Horse Ranch State Park: Ditto to previous review. We enjoyed the Quail loop very much. Site was plenty large. Although no sweeping views we loved the trees and other vegetation. Very clean shower facilities. Great dump station with an extra lane for both directions. Extremely helpful Rangers.

For Dead Horse Ranch State Park: One of our favorite places, in the Cooper’s Hawk or Red Tailed Hawk loops (not the Quail loop, which is down in the flat river bottom with small sites and no views). This review pertains to the Cooper’s Hawk and Red Tailed Hawk loops only. Second visit this year and both visits were awesome. Most sites are very large, both length and width. Paved pads with some grass between the sites. Native vegetation abounds with primarily tall perennial grasses, yuccas, and scattered shrubs and trees. There are even a few small pines and cedars. These two RV loops are terraced above the river into the hillside in the foothills. Many sites have fantastic views of the mountains to the west and the city of Cottonwood to the south. At night you see the lights of Cottonwood below you, and the lights of Jerome twinkling halfway up the western mountainside like they are floating. The hosts are wonderful, and other campers have always been friendly! Plenty of hiking trails here and lagoons to fish in. There are two nice golf courses nearby at reasonable rates. Each camping loop has a small but well maintained bathhouse if you need it. Sites have fire rings and picnic tables, and you can purchase firewood from the camp hosts. A really great place to visit!

For Dead Horse Ranch State Park: Second visit here and my first positive review still stands. We love this area. So much to do. A little chilly for Jan but we still had a great time hiking and mountain biking. This park has spacious, well kept sites. Shout out to the camp hosts! The facilities are clean. And the location along the verde river is beautiful. Highly recommend.
