For Dead Horse Ranch State Park: I'm not sure what constitutes 4- va 5-star ratings but, for us, it was the following...

Friendly staff and hosts
Clean bathrooms and showers (water was more warm than hot)
Clean, level, spacious sites (asphalt)
Good price ($30-35 depending on location)

There are three loops, a group-only, tent-only and cabins. The park is pretty with a lot to do if you enjoy walking/hiking. Just before the park is a public dog park.

We stayed a night in Quail loop which is lower and more shaded, and one in Blackhawk which is slightly higher and more exposed but warms up faster with a lovely evening view of Jerome, AZ.

We would return here again. It makes a great base for Cottonwood, Jerome, Sedona and Red Rock.

For Dead Horse Ranch State Park: Nice place, quiet. It is very close to town, but i did not hear any city sounds. All was paved. My spot may have had a little shade depending on the time of day.

For Dead Horse Ranch State Park: Loved it! We were there in late October so we didn't need shade. We stayed in the farthest, highest loop. $30/ night. 40 ft motorhome. Plenty of space between sites. Easy to maneuver. Paved. Good roads. Views. Close to town. No wifi, but data/cell service good. Clean. Convenient to visit Sedona, Jerome, and other must-see sights. We would stay there again, w/o question.

For Dead Horse Ranch State Park: Mid-May 2016, and we picked DHR based on the amenities offered, as my "roughing it" days are behind me. I must say the grounds were very well maintained, the showers and bathrooms were spotless, and the location of the park is perfect if you want to explore the surrounding areas and towns. BUT (and this is a massive But), considering what this park has to offer, the location for the tent camp is one of the worst we've encountered. It is at the highest, most recessed part of the campground, had absolutely zero (I say again, zero, nada) shade - not a tree within a half mile - the winds were constantly 15-20 mph, and we were within snoring distance from our fellow campers. We were very fortunate the weather was moderate enough that we didn't get fried up there, and I have to thank the Mrs. for suggesting we bring a shade tent along with us. In my opinion, the park is only suited for RV's, and if I had been in one I could have given it 5 stars, but I wasn't and so I couldn't.

For Dead Horse Ranch State Park: Agree with everything me3tv said.
Camped here in Oct/15. There are three loops, the shady one is $5 more. Nice clean restrooms and free showers.

For Dead Horse Ranch State Park: Near to town but yet in a quiet area with campsites well spread out. Open area. Not many trees. There are plenty of bath facilities and clean. There were a lot of tent campers and families but the family fun noise faded out pretty fast after sundown. Very good location. This could be a good base camp for the area and save a few dollars too.
