For Racoons Creek Recreation Area: Showed up looking for first come first serve as they’ve been booked for reservations through Mar for months. Came in through main gate, note: if bringing a guest who doesn’t have a valid military ID you will need to pull into the visitors center before the gate to get a pass. We are in a dry site now, which is right on the bay with only one other camper, and were told that a full h/u site should be available within 2-3 days. So far this place is amazing, tons of perks and amenities, dog runs/beach, dump station, water, propane, so not sure I even want to move to the full h/u because it’s so private at dry camp and right on the bay. Will add update after I spend more time

For Racoons Creek Recreation Area: It is a very pleasant place for families pets, esa and service dogs. Quietest place even in the daytime. Paradise in Tampa. One of the finest mwr campgrounds. Lots of full timers, but very neat organized and nothing sloppy. Air activity is at a distance, not overhead, so it’s still quiet despite having active air activity. All the amenities are just a bonus compared to a dnr site, which have been our preference till we arrived at this place. Camp hosts are delightful. There is plenty of things to do just outside the gates too. Base does close up early. There is often weather alerts as well. Even the dry camping and limited hookup spots are pristine. Dog beach is closed recently, but still plenty of space for dogs otherwise. All the children are very respectful and inclusive with each other it seems. Lots of fire ants. That’s Florida for ya. Office will give you some ground treatment for your site if you need it. Rules are enforced. Very safe place. Just remember to roll up your awning no matter what everytime you leave your site. Storms roll in with almost no notice, come and go. And your surrounded by water on the water, so the breeze is nice even on the hottest of days. Pavement is hot, for dogs, be mindful to walk them on grass midday but there are in some spots these tiny little cactus type things the size of a pea. Brutually painful. Haven’t seen a raccoon yet. But tons of wild rabbits. Some ticks, but not as many as other coastal areas.

For Racoons Creek Recreation Area: So the base is very nice. Great views. Close to everything. There’s even a dog beach! Laundry was big & good prices. Did not utilize the bathrooms. Great walking for dogs. Spots are mostly concrete & level. If it rains it’ll get muddy. They have recycling which is very nice. With all that being said, the way the do their reservations is very strange. It’s first come first serve or it’s not? You can reserve, you can’t? You have to move to dry camping after 2 weeks or you don’t? Very confusing. Unless you’re in the ‘annex’ area, everything else is very cramped. Most areas they really pack you in there. It’s a top up if we’d go back or not.

For Racoons Creek Recreation Area: The campground was fine, but checking in was PAINFUL !!! It was the slowest, most inefficient we have ever encountered . The woman taking our information was rude, and slow at her job. Her supervisor wasn’t much better. It took us over an hour to get through the process. When we tried to provide feedback to them, their response was, “ every base does it differently , and we are doing you a favor for allowing you to stay here.” I hope the rest of the base functions better than this office.

For Racoons Creek Recreation Area: Quiet, safe, friendly. Lots of things to do in the area (Busch Gardens for one🙂) plus a great military base with some great amenities (beach, boat rentals for two🙂🙂). Sites are shaded and decent. Bath house was spotless!! Highly recommend.

For Racoons Creek Recreation Area: Great post and amenities. The camp sites need work. I stayed two night in dry camping area. It would help if the sites were mark rather than driving around to look for a space. My second night I was wakened up at 2330hrs by the camp host telling me I had to turn my generator off during quiet hours. I checked the rules and they only allow generators to run if the temperature is below 45 degrees. The first night it was below 45 degrees. It’s basically impossible for a all electric Class A batteries to make it through the night even with just the refrigerator running. Shame on me for not reading the rules, shame on management for not saying something at check in since he saw my coach. We decided to leave at midnight. First time I’ve dry camped and could use the generator.

For Racoons Creek Recreation Area: This park has it all! Very well maintained, pristine beach, small marina with rentals. Exceptional shower and laundry facilities. Dry camp is nicely situated and usually have to start their and move into a hook up spot when it becomes available. Their is a nice restauraunt at beach but currently closed.
