Gay-Friendly Cities Prosper
A recent segment of CNN's Inn The Money featured a professor from George Mason University by the name of Richard Florida. He is the author of the book The Rise of the Creative Class and stated that the more "gay-friendly" a city is, the more economically prosperous it can be.
He said that the college educated youth are moving to the most "gay-friendly" cities because those cities tend to have the best job markets. Think of Silicon Valley and San Francisco. Microsoft (and now Google in their expansion) and Seattle. Other cities at the top include Boston, Portland Oregon and Tampa-St. Petersburg, Florida. These are cities where open-mindedness leads to innovation and new technology. These cities are prospering and tend to be both more expensive and culturally interesting. You almost don't have to look at hotel room rates in the top and bottom of these lists to know which is doing much better. The gay-friendly cities are much more expensive to visit.
The cities at the bottom end of gay-friendly cities? They include Pittsburgh, Birmingham AL, Detroit, Buffalo, Charlotte NC, and Oklahoma City. These are not the most prosperous, open-minded cities these days. The kids are leaving and not many new jobs are coming in. The educated youth then goes to where the money and ideas are growing.

I would tend to agree with this theory. Some cities are just larger so they have a lot of gays anyway, like Chicago or New York. A list should be limited to a city where it is noticeable and has a real impact like these already mentioned.
I was outed at my job at Maersk line in Charlotte North Carolina. They did everything they could to push me out. I am the guardian of a disabled adult who is HIV positive. The employeer found out and did not want to hire me. I graduated from UNCC in 2002 and have had job problems ever since. I worked at the Hilton Garden Inn in uptown Charlotte and was treated like dirt. They knew I was Gay and never gave me any where to go just a dead end job. I worked at Nordstrom next in Charlotte North Carolina and they did not want to give me a managment job. I was told that because I was not straight I would not fit in. I have been out of a job for 14 months. This is one of the worst cities in the United States for Gay people. I sometimes think the people here would like it better if I was dead. I never would of moved here if I knew there are no good jobs for strong normal gay people.
To young person in Charlotte: Sweetheart get the H--- out of that place! There are alot better places where you and your friend would be welcomed and part of a caring community. I'm from Oak Park, IL and "family" is accepted here. I've heard that Arizona -several cities and Portland, OR are also nice places to live and work. Staying in a place like Charlotte is not only mentally unhealthy it will be physically unhealthy...neither of you needs the stress...Contact the GLBT community centers in an area that is interesting to you to get leads for jobs and housing---use the net, and see where it takes you, but don't let the bigots drag you down...get out and make the good life that you deserve...Chicago has Center on Halsted as a resource for our community in Chicago, they might be able to give you leads in other cities as well...This comes from the caring heart of a lesbian mother of a grown gay son...You and your friend are in my thoughts and prayers...don't give up, don't leave him, take him with you and MOVE ON!
