You Can Camp in All Kinds of Weather

Camping is not just for summer anymore. Camping is fast becoming a year-round activity. And while you usually plan camping trips with hopes of good weather, severe weather always is a possibility any time of the year. But you can still enjoy it if you are prepared. Stay positive and enjoy what mother nature throws at you instead of getting upset by what you can't control. You can control how you prepare however.

Camping, Rain and Flooding

Your most likely hazard from weather while camping is rain and the flooding that could be involved. Floods and flash floods are a very serious threat to campers. Even if not to yourself, the old rough road you came in on.

People tend to underestimate the threat and danger of water. A flood can cause problems after rain a mile away. You are in sunshine but the water races quickly to find you unprepared. A rain two days before you even left for your trip can have big impact on the roads and washes that you are going to be driving through. Never drive through standing water without knowing the facts. It only takes 18-24 inches to float most vehicles today. Whenever you come across a wash or area with water on the road, stop and get out. Take a look around the road and try to see how deep it is. A walking stick or even a rock can help with this. See how a rock splashes in the middle of the water. Does it hit something right away or does it make a deep sounding splash. And don't rely on just one. Try a few rocks in different places.

You may be camping on higher ground but what about the road you came in on. You may feel safe at your final campsite but if the mountain or canyon road washes out often, you could be stuck there.
