It has 234 drive-in sites (55 with a view of the water), 3 walk-up group sites (on the water's edge), and 40 walk-up sites (9 on the water's edge). It also provides cold water showers, two dump stations, picnic tables, grills, and an amphitheater for winter programs. There are no hookups. Flamingo has several hiking trails and canoe trails, and opportunities for saltwater fishing are plentiful. Limited groceries and camping supplies are available at the Flamingo Marina store. It has 108 drive up sites for tents and RVs, including one group site. There are rest rooms, water, and a sewer dump station with fresh water fill, but no showers or hookups. A picnic area is nearby, with fire grates and rest rooms. There is also a pond for fishing, an amphitheater for winter programs, and several hiking trails in the area. Camping Fees: per night Regular Sites - $16, maximum of 8 persons Group Sites - $28, maximum of 15 persons Wilderness Camping (Backcountry Camping) Open All Year Phone 239-695-3311 Details In the fall of 2005 many of the backcountry facilites were damaged by Hurricane Wilma. Most of the sites are now open. Broad River, Kingston Key, Graveyard Creek, and Carl Ross Key remain closed. Due to techincal problems, we are not able to update the expanded web pages ("more" - at the bottom of this page). Click here for a complete list of open and closed facilities. There are 47 designated wilderness campsites. The majority of the sites are accessible only by canoe, kayak, and motorboat. A few sites are accessible by foot. None are accessible by car. A backcountry permit is required for all wilderness campsites. Permits are only issued the day before or the day of the start of your camping trip. Permits are not issued over the telephone. Wilderness permits are written from the Ernest Coe Visitor Center only for two land sites in the Long Pine Key area: Ernest Coe and Ingraham Highway. For all other campsites, permits may be obtained at the Flamingo and Gulf Coast Visitor Centers. Winter wilderness users whose trips originate from the Florida Keys can obtain permits by phone by calling 239-695-2945 for the following locations only: North Nest Key, Little Rabbit Key, Carl Ross Key, and the Cape Sable Beaches. Permit Fees: $10 per permit plus $2 per person per night Lodging Options Flamingo Lodge, Marina, and Outpost Resort Currently closed due to damage caused by hurricanes Phone 800-600-3813 Details The Flamingo Lodge is the only lodging available in the park. It is open year-round, with 103 rooms, and 24 cottages with kitchen facilities. A restaurant and cafe are open during the winter. Lauderdale and Fort Myers. Car Main Park Entrance and Flamingo: Visitors coming from the Miami area and points north may take the Florida Turnpike (Route 821) south until it ends, merging with U.S. 1 at Florida City. Turn right at the first traffic light onto Palm Drive (State Road 9336/SW 344th St.) and follow the signs to the park. Visitors driving north from the Florida Keys should turn left on Palm Drive in Florida City and follow the signs to the park. Shark Valley Entrance: On Highway 41 (Tamiami Trail) 25 miles west of the Florida Turnpike exit for S.W. 8th Street. From the Naples area, take U.S. 41 (Tamiami Trail) east to Shark Valley. Gulf Coast: 5 miles south of Highway 41 (Tamiami Trail) on State Road 29, in Everglades City. From Interstate 75 (Alligator Alley), take exit 80 (State Road 29) south and proceed 20 miles to Everglades City. Once in Everglades City, follow the signs to the park. Visitor Center is on the right. Bus Greyhound Bus Lines offers service to Homestead, but there is no public transportation from there to the park entrance or into the park. Getting Around The park may be explored by personal vehicle, commercial tour bus, bicycle, motor boat, or canoe/kayak. The park's concessioners offer several options, including boat tours and tram tours. Powerboats, canoes, and kayaks can be brought into the park or rented from the park's concessioner. They are an ideal way to explore the mangrove coast.
