Wilderness Camping (Backcountry Camping)

Open All Year
Phone 239-695-3311

Details

In the fall of 2005 many of the backcountry facilites were damaged by Hurricane Wilma. Most of the sites are now open. Broad River, Kingston Key, Graveyard Creek, and Carl Ross Key remain closed.

Due to techincal problems, we are not able to update the expanded web pages ("more" - at the bottom of this page). Click here for a complete list of open and closed facilities.

There are 47 designated wilderness campsites. The majority of the sites are accessible only by canoe, kayak, and motorboat. A few sites are accessible by foot. None are accessible by car.

A backcountry permit is required for all wilderness campsites. Permits are only issued the day before or the day of the start of your camping trip. Permits are not issued over the telephone. Wilderness permits are written from the Ernest Coe Visitor Center only for two land sites in the Long Pine Key area: Ernest Coe and Ingraham Highway. For all other campsites, permits may be obtained at the Flamingo and Gulf Coast Visitor Centers. Winter wilderness users whose trips originate from the Florida Keys can obtain permits by phone by calling 239-695-2945 for the following locations only: North Nest Key, Little Rabbit Key, Carl Ross Key, and the Cape Sable Beaches. Permit Fees: $10 per permit plus $2 per person per night

Additional Information

Getting There

Plane
The closest airports are Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and Fort Myers.

Car
Main Park Entrance and Flamingo: Visitors coming from the Miami area and points north may take the Florida Turnpike (Route 821) south until it ends, merging with U.S. 1 at Florida City. Turn right at the first traffic light onto Palm Drive (State Road 9336/SW 344th St.) and follow the signs to the park. Visitors driving north from the Florida Keys should turn left on Palm Drive in Florida City and follow the signs to the park.

Shark Valley Entrance: On Highway 41 (Tamiami Trail) 25 miles west of the Florida Turnpike exit for S.W. 8th Street. From the Naples area, take U.S. 41 (Tamiami Trail) east to Shark Valley.

Gulf Coast: 5 miles south of Highway 41 (Tamiami Trail) on State Road 29, in Everglades City. From Interstate 75 (Alligator Alley), take exit 80 (State Road 29) south and proceed 20 miles to Everglades City. Once in Everglades City, follow the signs to the park. Visitor Center is on the right.

Bus
Greyhound Bus Lines offers service to Homestead, but there is no public transportation from there to the park entrance or into the park.

Getting Around
The park may be explored by personal vehicle, commercial tour bus, bicycle, motor boat, or canoe/kayak. The park's concessioners offer several options, including boat tours and tram tours. Powerboats, canoes, and kayaks can be brought into the park or rented from the park's concessioner. They are an ideal way to explore the mangrove coast.

More Camping Tips

Make campground reservations early if possible.

Real contact information.
Real phone numbers.
Real websites.

Unlike other travel websites, AllStays.com gives you direct links to the park websites.

If possible, call the campground or rv park to confirm the current status of the location. These come and go throughout the year due to closings, budget cuts and of course, mother nature.

The earlier you arrive, the more likely you will get the type of site you want to have. Stronger wi-fi signal? Quiet space?
