Visiting Bellingham in Northern Washington

You missed this year's tulip festival. Now what? A lot, actually. Summer is Washington's premier playtime.

For a less-crowded vacation, head to Bellingham , WA. Fly into Seattle, 90 miles to the south, and drive northward along Puget Sound. The San Juan Islands are to the west; a day trip for fishing, whale watching or touring the villages is well-spent. You can join a charter tour from Bellingham .

Located on Bellingham Bay – Mount Baker looms in the distance – Bellingham is about 20 miles from the Canadian border. (Bellingham is the closest U.S. city to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver – book early!) The city is known for its parks and hiking trails: The National Park Service and American Hiking Society named Bellingham “Trail Town U.S.A.” a few years ago. Join the locals walking and jogging the well-maintained paths. Mountain bikers will enjoy some of the more rugged terrain on Mount Baker.

Golf Digest was impressed with the number of golf courses located in the region. And the Arnold Palmer-designed Semiahmoo Golf Course has won the Golf Magazine Silver Award for Best Golf Resorts in America three times. Not interested in golf? Why not watch the bald eagles swoop from their nests or Orcas breeching in the bay? Raft down the Nooksack River or rent a sailboat for a tour of the bay.

Whether you prefer a tent or an RV when you camp, the area state parks offer a variety of sites. Silver Lake has 89 individual sites while Lighthouse Marine Park offers 25. More interested in warm, comfy beds and hot breakfasts? There are multiple Bed & Breakfasts and hotels . The 226-room Semiahmoo Resort Golf Spa has a AAA Four Diamond rating, making it an appealing pad, especially with its special summer rates. But best of all, the resort offers a full-service spa to ensure complete relaxation.
