Features > Save Money > Save Money In Your RV: Driving Down The Road
Another round of money saving tips. Here are some of the most common ways to save a bit of money and still be on the road enjoying your RV. Feel free to add more or discuss these below.
Lower your speed. Lower speeds get you more miles out of each gallon of fuel.
Use a light foot on the pedals. Quick stops and fast starts both costs you more money. If you see the light is going to turn up ahead, slow down a bit. You may just make it through without having to come to a complete stop.
Lighten your load. Less weight consumes less gas. If all your various tanks are full and you just stocked up on groceries, firewood and reading books, you're going to get worse fuel mileage. On the flip side, if this heavy load keeps you from having to pay for hookups in a fancy RV park, you'll save money.
Keep your tires properly inflated. This can save up to 3% on your fuel mileage. Many people don't check them often enough to the point that they are dangerous as well. There is a philosophy out there called hyper mileage where people try to get the highest mileage they can. They go to extremes for the average person but there are some lessons to be learned by it as well. Do a Google search for it as we won't recommend any of those tactics here. In our AllStays RV, we do keep our tires inflated a couple pounds higher than the recommended range.
Air conditioning uses more fuel. If you are flexible in your travels, keep this in mind as you plan your day. Maybe you can leave earlier in the morning? On the flip side to this however, you may want to drive during the hottest time of the day to avoid paying for hookups or running your generator for air conditioning once you are parked. You have to decide what saves you more there.
Happy exploring and safe travels
